Domestic RV Reducers Achieve Breakthrough in Substitution, Embarking on a New Era of Independent R&D

China has ranked as the world’s largest industrial robot application market for thirteen consecutive years, and the process of self-reliance in core components has now reached a key milestone. Thanks to sustained technological breakthroughs over the past five years, domestically produced RV reducers have broken the long-standing monopoly held by overseas companies. Reducers for medium- and small-load applications are now largely domestically sourced. However, reliance on imported products remains high for high-end, heavy-load models. As a result, the industry has officially transitioned from the first phase—focused on “whether alternatives exist”—to the second phase: achieving technological breakthroughs through independent innovation.

 

The 2026 World Robot Conference press conference revealed key industry data: from January to May this year, revenue of domestic robot enterprises above designated size surpassed 90 billion yuan, growing 26.9% year-on-year, indicating strong momentum across the sector. As a critical joint component in industrial robots, RV reducers play a vital role in reducing speed and increasing torque. Each six-axis robot requires three to six units, accounting for 30% to 35% of the total machine cost, making them a pivotal part that determines both performance and production expenses.

 

Professor Zhang Yueming from Beijing University of Technology admitted in an interview that current domestic substitution shows clear stratification: RV reducers suitable for medium- and small-load applications have achieved large-scale replacement and fully meet general industrial demands. However, for heavy-duty, demanding environments such as automotive production lines, imported products still dominate 80% to 90% of the market, highlighting persistent gaps in high-end segments.

 

According to Zhang, the initial phase of domestic substitution focused on closing supply gaps and ensuring autonomy in core components. The next stage will shift competition toward technical capability, aiming to upgrade from merely “being able to manufacture” to “manufacturing superior products.” Currently, China’s RV reducer industry has split into two development paths: one based on reverse engineering and imitation, which has low entry barriers and quick implementation but is highly vulnerable to foreign patent restrictions, keeping technology in a follower position; the other follows a full-chain independent R&D approach, covering fundamental theory modeling, custom gear profile design, and precision machining processes. Though requiring substantial upfront investment and longer development cycles, this path is the only way to achieve technological leadership.

 

After years of iterative refinement, domestic RV reducers have significantly narrowed the gap with leading international products. Core precision metrics—including backlash, gear clearance, and transmission error—have reached global benchmark levels. In terms of accuracy, service life, operational stability, and batch consistency, domestic products now closely match top overseas brands. Compared to imported alternatives, Chinese reducers offer distinct advantages in overall cost-effectiveness and order delivery time, helping domestic robot manufacturers reduce manufacturing costs, shorten lead times, and enhance competitiveness in the marketplace.

 

Zhang emphasized that overseas market expansion cannot rely solely on price advantages. Global customers demand consistent high standards for product quality. Only when comprehensive performance reaches the world’s top tier can homegrown brands achieve sustainable success and earn lasting recognition abroad.

 

The self-reliance of core robot components is a crucial step in China’s transformation from a major industrial manufacturer to a global leader in advanced manufacturing. Domestic transmission companies continue deepening their focus on core technologies, steadily narrowing the gap with international leaders in high-end fields. Looking ahead, Zhang proposed policy recommendations: supporting measures should be strengthened to encourage robot system integrators to adopt domestically produced core components, accelerating market penetration in premium segments. He also noted that technological breakthroughs in advanced manufacturing are long-term endeavors that cannot be achieved through short-term efforts alone.
