The BBC recently reported that an increasing number of warehouse automation robots made in China are being applied in the UK’s retail and logistics industries, becoming important equipment for local enterprises to enhance warehouse operation efficiency and address labor shortages.
Reports show that the automatic mobile robots produced by the robot manufacturing base in Hefei, China, have been exported to warehouses in many countries after assembly and testing. At present, approximately 2,000 Chinese-made warehouse robots have been put into use in 10 warehouse facilities in the UK, serving many large local retailers.
This type of robot can autonomously move shelves and pallets, enabling goods to reach the operators directly and optimizing the warehousing operation process. Compared with traditional automation systems that rely on conveyor belts and fixed facilities, mobile robots are more flexible in deployment, which can effectively improve the efficiency of order picking, increase warehouse capacity, reduce operational errors, and meet the efficient operation requirements of e-commerce logistics.
Productivity growth in the UK has been sluggish for over a decade. Economists and international institutions all recognize the crucial role of robotics technology in enhancing business efficiency. The report released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in 2026 points out that technologies such as robots are important means for the UK to enhance productivity. The report also pointed out that the UK has a solid manufacturing foundation, but the application level of robots is relatively low and does not match its industrial foundation.
As one of the largest e-commerce and logistics markets in Europe, the UK still has many warehouses in the early stage of automation, and there is a strong demand for intelligent transformation. British enterprises generally hope to rapidly deploy automation technology to enhance the efficiency of goods handling, storage and picking within limited Spaces and reduce reliance on manual labor.
In addition, the shortage of labor in the UK is prominent, and the warehousing and logistics industry is short of manpower, which further urges enterprises to increase investment in automated equipment. A relevant person in charge of a British logistics automation enterprise stated that robots and automation technology have become essential support for local enterprises to maintain normal operations and meet market order demands.
The report also mentioned that China’s robot industry has developed rapidly in recent years. The technologies accumulated in the field of new energy vehicles, such as batteries, motors, cameras, sensors, and semiconductors, are being widely applied in the robot industry, forming a mutually supportive industrial ecosystem.
Industry analysts believe that Chinese robot enterprises have formed competitive advantages by virtue of their manufacturing capabilities, supply chain systems and product iteration speed. The overseas expansion of the industry is expected to replicate the global path of new energy vehicles, and their business scope will gradually expand to multiple fields such as humanoid robots, industrial robots and delivery robots.
