At FABTECH 2026 this month, FANUC America put its CRX collaborative robot line on a welding bench — and pushed the demo well beyond the small, thin-gauge parts that cobot welding used to be known for.
What was actually shown
◈
CRX-3iA on a magnetic base: automated portable welding, running vertical-up passes on large structures. The magnetic mount lets the cell be moved between fixtures without bolting it down.
◈
CRX-10iA/L on a seventh-axis rail, paired with a rotating deck: collaborative arc welding on longer workpieces, coordinated motion between rail and turntable.
◈
CRX-30iA + CRX-10iA in one cell: welding, part handling, and post-process inspection chained together.
◈
M-950/500F-28A with two ARC Mate robots: heavy-weld simulation for really large fabrications.
◈
Generative AI programming: a CRX-20iA was commanded in plain English, and the system turned the instruction into Python code and robot motion.
Why this matters for fabricators
For the last few years, “cobot welding” has mostly meant a small robot on a rolling cart, good for one-off and low-volume thin sheets. The FABTECH lineup signals that the same platform is now being asked to handle:
01
Heavy structural parts columns, beams, large enclosures, not just brackets.
02
Mixed-volume shops where a job runs once and then never comes back.
03
Short setup windows magnetic bases, intuitive pendants, and vision-assisted seam finding cut changeover time.
The bigger shift is on the software side. Natural-language instruction plus AI-generated code means a shop no longer needs a dedicated robotics programmer on staff to keep a welding cell running.
What ARES is watching
At Yooheart / Ares Robot, our welding workstations follow the same direction: a single straight torch configuration, external axis coordination (positioner, track, gantry), and offline programming support. The goal is the same one FANUC is demonstrating at FABTECH — let a mid-size fab shop automate welding without re-building the floor around it.
The cobot welding segment crossed an invisible line in 2026: it stopped being a novelty and started being a legitimate answer for structural steel, construction equipment, and job-shop production.
